Reggae x-mas Utrecht

R.I.P. Glen Adams, keyboard player extraordinaire

Reggae music lost one of its pioneers last Friday with the death of keyboardist Glen Adams, who died at the University Hospital of the West Indies. He was 65 years old. Known as 'Capo', Adams was most active as a musician and performer during the mid- and late 1960s when he was a member of the Hippy Boys and the Upsetters, two of the most influential bands in reggae history. The latter backed The Wailers on Duppy Conqueror and Mr Brown, which were produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Adams wrote Mr Brown, an eerie song about a three-wheeled coffin prowling the streets of Kingston. Check the obituary @ Jamaican Gleaner here.

LOCK IT DOWN VOLUME 3

Short story: In 2005 I made a mix called Lock it Down and distributed it among friends. Things got a bit out of hand and it became quite a succes. People I had never seen before in my life were discussing the mixes I made. Volume 2 was soon in demand and eventually it was released in 2007 through an internet label called TheNewWorck. They dubbed volume 2 as volume 1. Now, 41 months later (yeah, I know) here's volume 3. Or volume 2. Whichever you prefer. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. One drops, riddims, foundation, effects... It's all there. Let the music do the talking..

Sadly another great artist leaves us, r.i.p. Mr. Cool Ruler

Gregory Isaacs ranks as one of the true superstars of reggae music, with a career that spans three decades and legions of loyal fans worldwide. His humble upbringing began in Kingston, Jamaica where he was born in 1951. Like many before him, he started his singing career in the early 70's by working with a number of producers and entering various local talent competitions. His first records of notice were on Rupie Edwards' Success label. To gain artistic freedom and financial control of his own work, Isaacs was started his own African Museum label and shop in Kingston in 1973 with singer Errol Dunkley. In order to finance his label, he continued to work with other producers such as Winton "Niney The Observer" Holness, Gussie Clark, Lloyd Campbell, and Alvin "GG" Ranglin for the rest of the 70's. His early recordings were responsible for the development of his singing style, love ballads with his cool relaxed nasal style, as well as his ease with songs about social protest. By 1980, Gregory had become one of the top stars in the reggae world, touring the UK and US extensively. He signed with Virgin Records' Frontline label and gained a considerable name for himself outside the reggae world. Isaacs continued recording singles on his African Museum label in Jamaica - ultimately those singles were gathered for the Virgin releases. His preeminence during this period was confirmed by the nickname of "Cool Ruler," given to him by critics and fans after the title of one his albums. By the mid 80's, he had a number of personal and financial problems and ended up in a Jamaican prison for a short time. After his release, he began work recording for scores for different producers, which included some of his best material for King Jammys, Bobby Digital, and Steely and Clevie. His 1988 landmark album, "Red Rose for Gregory," and the single "Rumors" brought him to worldwide prominence again. Since then he has recorded a number of albums, scores of singles, and has continued to tour extensively worldwide. Over the years, Gregory Isaacs has worked hard to keep his legendary status and reputation in the reggae business second to none. Artists Only! released "Gregory Isaacs - Live at Maritime Hall" in conjunction with 2B1 label the fall of 1998 to a great response. This all new studio album "Turn Down The Lights," produced by the legendary Lloyd "King Jammys", really brings out the essence of this veteran singer, who sounds as strong as ever with the best up-to-date musical tracks.

Gregory passed away at 59 due to an aggressive form of liver cancer. He will be missed by many! REST IN PEACE!

Jezzreel - I Put My Trust
Junior Delahaye - Mystic Revellation
Jah Batta - Informer

For all you nerds like us here's some niformation i found about the label. Have fun with the mix its for download and dont hesitate to spread it around!!!

Wackies is an American independent record label specialized in reggae and dub music.

Founded in the 1970s by Lloyd Barnes, as the Wackie's House Of Music based on White Plains Road in New York, the name Wackies also include a record shop and a studio. It is considered by some to be the first significant reggae studio and label in the United States.

Wackies Sound
Wackies music has a distinctive sound. It is bass heavy and deliberately crafted to have what some people call a "lo-fi" sound. Wackies achieved this sound using special recording techniques and equipment. This equipment was so notable that some pieces now have a place in the Les Paul Museum. Popular Jamaican reggae artists such as Horace Andy, Sugar Minott, and Wayne Jarret appeared regularly on the label. However, Lloyd Barnes developed a number of New York-based artists such as: Itopia; Chosen Brothers; Love Joys; Jah Batta; Clive Field Marshall; Dub Generals, and Junior Delahaye, whose releases primarily appeared on the Wackies label. Most commonly known as "Bullwackie All Stars," Lloyd Barnes worked with a notable group of studio musicians including: Jerry Harris; Ras Menelik; Jerry Johnson; Clive "Azul" Hunt, and Douglas Levy.

Influence on Hip Hop
Wackies music, while mainly known for its contribution to reggae, influenced the burgeoning hip hop movement of late-70's and Early-80's New York. Reggae sound system dances were quite popular throughout New York City. Wackies music was played on specialized, powerful soundsystems while reggae deejays such as Jah Batta vocalized rhythmically and melodically atop the trademark bass-heavy sound. This influenced and encouraged the development of the hip hop parties featuring live MC's, the counterpart to the reggae soundsystem deejay. In 1979, Wackies also released one of the earliest hip hop records, "Wack Rap" by Solid C., Bobby D., and Kool Drop.

1990's and Wackies Far East Chapter
Wackies continued to record and release music through the 1990s, and in 1999 collaborated with Ras Takashi to form the Wackies Far East Chapter in Japan. An extensive promotional tour of Japan featuring Ras Takashi and Ras Kush of Black Redemption Sounds of Praises occurred in the same year to establish the label.[2][3]. Releases on the Wackie Far East label included contribution from Lloyd Barnes, Ras Takahi, Ras Kush, among others. Wackies Far East Chapter, under the guidance of Ras Takashi, continues to be a force for Wackies release and distribution in Japan.

2000's
Wackies music continues to be released in the 2000s. Jammyland, Plush label, Ras Takashi, Dubsensemania and many others continue to collaborate with Lloyd Barnes. Concurrently, re-issues of 1970's and 80's Wackies music have attained remarkable popularity and remain a constant force on the vintage scene.

LOVE AND ROCKERS: interview Ted Bafaloukos

Last week MR T hooked me up with a very interesting interview: Ted Bafaloukos Taught Us Everything We Know About Jamaica,  on the Vice website here. Ted made the movie Rockers in the seventies, and it still holds as one of my favorite regae movies ever, read about how a Greek ended up 2 years in Jamaica. Also lots of cool picures; the one up here is Ted himself together with Horsemouth, and down here we Richard 'dirty' Hall smoking his herb.
